"DarkDan" was a name given to me during college. My first
year room mate in
the dorms was also named Dan, and there were many times when someone would shout
"Hey, Dan!" and we'd both turn around. In comparison, I was a little taller and
"tanner" than my room mate, (no, I don't have any real "ethnintisity"
behind it, I'm just a little tan) and people started calling me "the tall Dan",
and "the Dark Dan".
One night, the movie "Darkman" was playing at
our school theatre. Someone changed the name on my location board to "DarkDan"
and the name stuck. However (see data, lower-right)...
Are people
stealing my nickname?
On
http://home.att.net/~kjbrasda/ulmbintro2.html a gentleman writes:
"I got my nickname from a book named "the pocket pc handbook" by Dan
Hanttula. His PocketPC's name is DarkDans548 and I liked it so much that I
stole it. In fact, my email address is DarkDan548@home.com because I'm Dark,
my name is Dan, and my Jornada's (my PocketPC) model number is 548."
Creative guesses as to the darker origin...
Subj: The real reason behind Dark Dan
Date: 3/20/98 4:57:59 PM Pacific Standard Time
Deep in the forest, amid the howling crys of coyotes, mountain lions, and
3 toed sloths, there lived a small boy named Dan, raised by wolves. Each
day, the tender mother would bring slivers of meat to the boy's hiding
place, burrowed in the bark of a mammoth tree. When the boy was of age, he
wandered out into the open, and kept walking. Something spurred him on. He
didn't know why, but he couldn't turn back. Not now. Finally, he came upon a
sight which left him breathless, a huge crystal blue lake, with a waterfall
100 ft. high. There, floating amid flowers and plants, a beautiful maiden
swam. She said 'Oh....you are very Dark, Dan, come in for a swim. I don't
think you've had a bath in years.' After he bathed, Dan was not dark, but he
preferred to remember that moment for all time. Thus, he calls himself Dark
Dan.
Subj: Who is DarkDan?

Once upon a midday stroll,
While listening to Rock and Roll,
I saw a light in yonder fold,
And ran to it to escape the cold.
The walls inside were fair to see,
From the floor grew a dark,
Dark tree.
I saw a dark apple and wanted some
So I spit out my dark, dark dark gum.
And guess what my dark dark eyes saw then
A a tall dark and handsome Alien.
He told me to throw the gum away
Or save it for another day.
He shot me with a dark-ray gun,
And now I am the only one...
Who knows the secret of DarkDan
He's not just a mortal man!
